Metagalactic Llamas Battle at the Edge of Time is another addictive arcade game from Jeff “Yak” Minter, ported to the PC faithfully by John Dow. The llamas from previous Llamasoft games have evolved, but now the whole fabric of time and curry is unravelling. Your job: rally the llamas and prepare for one last stand against the evil at the edge of time and space. Jeff Minter himself says it all in his comments on the game: “Metagalactic Llamas Battle at the Edge of Time is without doubt the silliest name for a game to come out of Llamasoft. The name occurred to me whilst I was walking along a beach in the South of France thinking, ‘what’s the silliest thing I could call a game?’. The actual game occurred to me whilst I was sitting on a bus in Portugal, so it’s quite a cosmopolitan game, especially as it features a South American ruminant.

The gameplay is quite simple but original – the llama spits at a 45 degree angle upwards to the left and right, depending on which way the animal is facing. Spit bounces off the screen edges and off a forcefield, the altitude of which the player can control. This allows expectoration to be directed towards spiders which descend from the top of the screen and which, if allowed to reach the floor, turn into weevils (biologically unlikely I know, but hey) which attack the llama.”

This PC remake by John Dow sports bright VGA graphics and the same addictive gameplay of the original. If you love Llamasoft’s quirky but addictive games (and who doesn’t?), this is a must-have. Highly recommended!
